Sign in and sign out

VNCchat shares one sign-in with the rest of VNClagoon. You sign in once through your organization’s identity provider, and every VNClagoon app — the portal, VNCchat and the others — opens without asking again. This is VNC SSO.

VNCchat needs the address of your organization’s chat server, not the portal address — the same host the portal opens the product from (for example https://vncchat.<your-domain>).

Enter it without a path or query string. Your organization’s portal address is the launchpad, not the chat server, and the app will reject it. If you do not know your organization’s address, ask your administrator.

  1. Open VNCchat from your organization’s VNClagoon portal (select the chat+ tile). If you are already signed in to the portal, VNCchat opens directly - there is no second prompt.
  2. On first launch the app shows “No server selected”. Select Change, enter the chat server address from the table above, then Connect.
  3. Select Sign in with VNCiac. Your organization’s identity provider opens. Sign in there and complete two-factor authentication if it is enabled; you are returned to VNCchat and land in your rooms.
  4. Use Change later only to point the app at a different organization (see Use more than one server below).

The desktop app does the same, but opens the sign-in in your system browser and hands it back to the app. If you are already signed in to the portal in that browser, it lands in the app with no extra prompt.

If your organization enables device pairing, Pair this device shows a one-time code/QR that lets a phone or another device sign in by approval instead of typing a password.

Use more than one server (for example VNC PROD and SRC PROD)

Section titled “Use more than one server (for example VNC PROD and SRC PROD)”

VNCchat keeps one active server and one session per app profile. Selecting Change replaces the active server; signing out clears the offline copy of the data for that profile. There is no built-in multi-server switcher yet.

To work with two cells at the same time, use one of these:

  • Web app for the other cell - open the other cell’s portal in your browser and select the chat+ tile. It uses that cell’s portal sign-in and runs alongside the desktop app.

  • A second app profile (advanced) - start an independent copy with its own data directory, then set the other server in that window:

    macOS:

    open -n -a "VNCchat" --args --user-data-dir="$HOME/Library/Application Support/VNCchat-SRC"

    Windows (PowerShell):

    & "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\VNCchat\VNCchat.exe" --user-data-dir="$env:APPDATA\VNCchat-SRC"

    Linux:

    VNCchat --user-data-dir="$HOME/.config/VNCchat-SRC"

Each profile keeps its own server, session and offline data. The app icon is the same; keep a note of which window belongs to which cell.

A proper server switcher (saved servers with per-server sessions) is a planned enhancement.

Open your Own Avatar menu (top right) and choose Sign out. You can also reach Sign out from the top-bar account slot.

Signing out is a single sign-out for the whole suite: the shared session is cleared, so the portal and every other VNClagoon app sign out at the same time. The next time you open any of them you sign in again.

Signing out also clears the copy of your data that VNCchat kept on this device for offline reading, so the next person using the device cannot see your messages, rooms or contacts.
