Privacy and message settings

VNCchat gives you control over what other people see about you, how long rooms keep their history, and how much a conversation is allowed to interrupt you.

In Settings → Privacy:

Setting When it is on When it is off
Send read receipts People you chat with see when you have read their messages (Seen by …). You do not tell others when you have read a message.
Show typing indicator Others see {name} is typing… while you write. You do not show a typing indicator.

Both are stored for you and apply across your conversations. See Settings for the full settings reference.

Retention sets how long a conversation keeps its message history. Open the conversation’s ⋮ menu and choose Message retention, then pick Use default ({days} days), a fixed number of days (1 / 7 / 30 / 90 / 365), or Keep forever. Older messages are deleted on this schedule. Clear history removes the room’s messages right away. → Message retention

Silence a conversation without leaving it. In the conversation’s menu:

Control Effect
Mute No notifications from this conversation.
Mute sound Notifications still arrive, but silently.
Mute calls Do not ring for calls from this conversation.

Each has an inverse (Unmute, Unmute sound, Unmute calls). → Pin and mute a conversation

  • Read receipts and typing: Settings → Privacy.
  • Retention: the conversation’s ⋮ menu → Message retention.
  • Mute: the conversation’s menu (and the command palette).
