Install the desktop app
The VNCcontacts desktop app is the same address book in its own window, with a tray icon, system notifications and an unread badge — so it reaches you even when no browser tab is open.
Get it
Section titled “Get it”- Open the portal and use its download entry to pick the build for your system (macOS, Windows or Linux).
- Install it and open VNCcontacts.
- Sign in with the shared single sign-on — the app opens your system browser for the one login and comes straight back.
What you get
Section titled “What you get”- Tray icon with a menu: Open, Pause notifications (do-not-disturb) and Quit. The icon carries a small unread count.
- System notifications for new activity. They are shown only when the app is not the window you are looking at, so they do not interrupt work in front of you.
- Unread badge on the app icon (macOS Dock / Windows taskbar) and a tray tooltip, kept in step with the number you see on the bell.
- Pause notifications when you need quiet; it lasts until you turn it back on (it resets when you restart the app).
- Stays reachable — on macOS, closing the window keeps the app running; select the Dock icon (or the tray) to bring it back.
Offline and updates
Section titled “Offline and updates”The app keeps an encrypted local store, so offline viewing and editing work as they do on the web (see Work offline and sync).
VNCcontacts checks the store for a new version shortly after it starts and then every few hours. It does not download anything behind your back: when a new build is available you get a dialog naming the version and the one you are on, with three choices:
- Download & install — fetches the build, then offers Restart now (or Later, which installs it when you next quit).
- Later — dismisses the prompt. You are asked once per version, so the same build does not come up again.
- Open download page — opens the store page so you can install it by hand, for example if the download fails.
If the app is not in front of you when a version appears, you also get an operating-system notification.
To update on demand, use Help → Check for updates… or Help → Download latest version… in the app’s menu bar.
You do not need to reinstall the app for each update.
The Android app updates itself
Section titled “The Android app updates itself”On Android, VNCcontacts has the same check built in: shortly after it starts, and then periodically, it asks the cell whether a newer version exists. When one does, a prompt offers Update (the app downloads the file itself, verifies it and hands it to the system installer) or Later. You do not have to visit the store for an update, and your contacts are kept.
