How projects, work items and EVM fit together
VNCproject+ organises delivery in three layers.
The layers
Section titled “The layers”- Projects — a container with a key (for example
apollo), a status and an EVM mode (money or none). - Work items — the units of work inside a project, each with a subject, status, priority, assignee, Done % and due date.
- Time and plans — time entries and plan dates that feed progress and capacity.
Earned value (EVM)
Section titled “Earned value (EVM)”When a project’s EVM mode is money, the project tracks earned value: progress Done % combines with budget and actual cost to give the metrics you see in the view (for example the project’s EVM flag on the portfolio table). Projects with EVM = none simply track progress without money.
The maths is deterministic and runs on the server, so the portfolio roll-up and the project views agree.
Capacity
Section titled “Capacity”My capacity compares your allocations (percent, over a date range) with availability for the next weeks. Allocating a person more than 100% lights the heat-map, which is how over-commitment is spotted early.
Why it is layered
Section titled “Why it is layered”Work items are the reliable unit (a status and a percent each); projects roll them up; capacity looks across projects for the same people. Keeping them separate is what lets the same work item appear on a board, a plan and a report without a second copy.
