Work offline and sync

VNCcontacts keeps working when the network does not. You can browse and edit contacts and companies offline; your changes are queued and sent the moment you are back online.

On the web, VNCcontacts is installable. Use your browser’s Install action (or Add to Home Screen on a phone) so it opens in its own window and remembers what it has shown you — after a first visit it also opens from a saved copy when there is no connection.

  1. With a connection, open VNCcontacts and the records you care about — they are cached for you.
  2. Lose the connection. A banner appears: Offline — showing saved data, or Offline — N unsynced changes once you edit.
  3. Edit a contact as usual. The change is saved on your device and added to the queue. It is not lost while you are offline.

When the connection returns, your queued changes are sent automatically, in order. A banner shows how many are waiting (N unsynced changes) with a Sync now action if you do not want to wait. When the queue drains, the banner disappears.

If a record was changed somewhere else while you were offline, the two edits cannot both win. The latest server version is kept and your stale edit is dropped; a banner explains what happened:

A change to a contact was discarded because it had already been edited elsewhere. The latest version is shown.

Open the record to see the current values, and re-apply anything you still need. This is deliberate — it is better to tell you than to silently overwrite someone else’s work.

If the device has no room to save offline, VNCcontacts says so instead of losing the change:

Your device is out of storage, so a change couldn’t be saved offline. Free up space and try again.

Free up space, then re-apply the change.

The desktop app uses an encrypted local store, so offline editing works there too — see Install the desktop app.
